Up to 80 Labour MPs could sign letter of no confidence by tonight!

An e-mail is circulating among Labour MPs encouraging Gordon Brown to step down as Prime Minister.

The e-mail suggests the wording of a letter to the Prime Minister as follows:

Dear Gordon,

Over the last 12 years in government, and before, you have made an enormous contribution to this country and to the Labour Party, and this is widely acknowledged.

However we are writing now because we believe that in the current political situation, you can best serve the Labour Party and the country by stepping down as party leader and prime minister.

And so allowing the party to find a new leader to take us into the next general election.

"I gather there is a letter of no confidence doing the rounds of Labour MPs today. The rumour is that 40 MPs have signed up to it already. It needs 72 before events take on a momentum of their own."

Blears Resigns.

In a statement released today, Miss Blears urged voters to back Labour tomorrow at the local and European elections and said she wanted to "return to the grassroots (where I began), to political activism, to the cut and thrust of political debate". 

Miss Blears said: "Today I have told the Prime Minister that I am resigning from the Government. 

"My politics has always been rooted in the belief that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things, given the right support and encouragement. 

"The role of a progressive Government should be to pass power to the people. 

"I've never sought high office for the sake of it, or for what I can gain, but for what I can achieve for the people I represent and serve. 

"Most of all I want to help the Labour Party to reconnect with the British people, to remind them that our values are their values, that their hopes and dreams are ours too."

Jacqoffs Off.

Jacqui Smith is expected to stand down as home secretary in a reshuffle, Whitehall sources have told the BBC.

Next step should be arrest and a court appearance at her own expense.
Then maybe extradition to the USA to face Michael Savage.

Our Glorious Leader Is Here To Stay.

Gordon Brown said he would refuse to move aside even if senior Labour figures told him it would help the party retain seats at a general election, arguing that his focus was on tackling the recession and pushing through a programme of constitutional reform.

He said that he was determined to "clean up" the political system before the country went to the polls again while at the same time leading Britain out of recession.

"We have a duty before we have an election to show that the system has been cleaned up," he told BBC Radio's Today programme.

"I feel that with the record that I have had in the past, I am in the best position to clean up this political system so that when people go to the next election they will have candidates that they know, through transparency, are candidates they can vote for and at the same time they have a new form of democratic settlement before them that they can then feel proud that the British constitution has been reformed.

"That's what I'm going to do over these next few months.

"I am going to get on with the job that I set myself. People know I am determined and people know I work hard and people know that I am not going to allow temporary setbacks to deter me from doing what is the right thing for the country.

"I am not arrogant or unwilling to listen to people but I do believe that if people look towards what needs to be done at the moment, it is to get us through this economic downturn. I think I have got the experience to do that."
